Hurricane Season - Time to Prepare
Not only is hurricane season time to stock up on canned goods, water, and boards to cover windows,
it is time to prepare other areas. Do you have a will? Divorce decree? Custody papers? Passport?
Insurance papers? All important papers should be in a safe, transportable, dry location so that bad weather or evacuations
do not cause even more problems. It is also a good time to check that everything is up to date and current, from wills
to insurance.
I have hundreds of family photographs and momentos. I have a
few choice items, like my son's baby book, that I keep where I can get it quick if needed. I also added my pet's papers
to my legal papers for quick removal.
My general attitude is to prepare for
the worst and hope for the best. The outcome us usually a lot closer to best than worst, but with preparation, I usually
minimize the damage no matter what the outcome.

I got a notice to appear at court, now what?
Whether you were served with a lawsuit, filed a suit, or got a witness subpoena, appearing in court can be very intimidating.
Here are some ground rules to make it easier.
1. Dress appropriately. No shorts (some courts do not
allow capri pants either), no short skirts, no flip flops, and wear shirts with sleeves and a collar. Dress like you
are going for a job interview.
2. No gum or tobacco.
3. Always be respectful
to the judge, even if you think the judge is rude or unfair. The judge has the authority. Many judges have a long
memory. Even if they make a mistake and give a wrong ruling, you will have to deal with it. Respect goes a long
way. Fake it if you have to.
4. Do not disrespect the other party or the attorneys where
anyone in the court can see or hear you. See number 3.
5. If you have an attorney, listen to
them.
6. Keep emotions in check. You will be better able to respond to the process and will have mor
credability. People lie. The judge is very aware of that. If the other side is doing it, stay calm and wait
until your turn to address it. Don't make faces, yell, disrupt....stay calm, with conviction.
7. If
you have to testify, ALWAYS ANSWER HONESTLY. If you are caught in a lie, your credability will be shot, but worse, you
could be charged with perjury (look at Martha Stewart). If you don't know, say so, don't make up answers. Answer
short answers and don't give a lot of extra information. It will frustrate the judge and give the opposing party or
attorney more information to use against you later in ways you may not have anticipated.
